The challenge
A family 7-seater is the hardest-working interior of any car. This S-Max had three rows of seats coated in the evidence of years of family use: crushed snacks in the seat folds, juice and food stains on the fabric, sticky door cards and cup holders, sand and crumbs ground into the carpets, and that indefinable "family car" smell. The owners had given up trying to keep on top of it with quick cleans — the dirt was ingrained and the third row barely usable.
As our guide on keeping a car clean with kids acknowledges, you can't keep a family car pristine day to day — but you can reset it properly, and that's what was needed here.
How we solved it
- Thorough vacuum throughout, including all three seat rows, the boot and every crevice
- Hot-water extraction of the fabric seats and carpets to lift years of stains and ingrained grime, as in our stain removal work
- Steam cleaning of the high-touch points, cup holders, door cards and trim to cut through sticky residue and sanitise
- Cleaned and dressed the plastics, and cleaned the interior glass
- Odour treatment to clear the lingering family-car smell at the source
How often should a family car be detailed?
For a busy family car, a proper interior detail every few months — or seasonally — keeps it from sliding back into chaos, with quick maintenance cleans in between. It's far more effective than occasional surface wipes, because extraction and steam reach the ingrained dirt that builds up no matter how careful you are. Many of our family-car customers book a seasonal reset for exactly this reason.
