Faded soft top. Colour restored. Fraction of replacement cost.

Convertible hoods fade over time — black becomes grey-brown, navy bleaches out. Specialist fabric dye penetrates the weave and restores deep, even colour. Not a surface coating that peels — permanent restoration. From £150, at your door.

01 — The Service What's included

Cleaned, dyed, sealed. Colour that lasts.

A faded soft top cannot be cleaned back to its original colour — the UV degradation is within the fabric fibres, not on the surface. Specialist fabric dye works differently from paint: it penetrates into the weave, not onto it, so the hood continues to flex, fold and operate normally. The result looks factory-original and lasts years.

  • Deep clean & preparation — hood cleaned and stripped before dye application
  • Specialist fabric dye — penetrates the weave, not a surface coating that peels
  • Multiple coats — applied progressively for even, deep colour restoration
  • Seam and edge treatment — all areas including stitching and hood channels
  • Re-proofing sealant — water repellency applied over restored colour
  • Torn or damaged fabric — physical tears require trimmer repair before recolouring
  • Vinyl/PVC hard tops — vinyl hoods require different treatment; enquire at booking
  • Colour change — recolouring restores original colour; colour changing is a specialist separate service
Hood dirty as well as faded? We include a full clean as part of the preparation — but if cleaning alone is needed, see our soft top cleaning service.

02 — The visit How it works

Clean, dye, seal — colour restored for years.

Soft top recolouring requires thorough preparation. Dye applied to a dirty or coated surface will not bond correctly.

i

Strip & clean ~30 min

Hood cleaned with specialist fabric cleaner and any existing sealant or coating stripped. This preparation stage is critical — dye cannot bond correctly to a contaminated or coated surface. Hood left to dry fully.

ii

First dye coat ~30 min

Fabric dye worked methodically into the hood using a soft brush — seams, channels, and the main fabric areas. The dye penetrates the fabric weave rather than sitting on top. First coat establishes the base colour.

iii

Additional coats ~30 min

Second and third coats applied progressively — each allowed to partially dry between applications. This builds even, deep colour and covers any patchiness from uneven original fading.

iv

Re-proofing ~20 min

Re-proofing sealant applied over the finished dye. Restores water repellency and helps protect the dye from UV degradation. Hood should not be operated until fully cured — typically 2–4 hours.

Audi A3 hood had faded badly. After recolouring it looks factory original. The product soaked in rather than sitting on top — moves and flexes naturally.

Quoted over £1,200 for a new hood. Recolouring cost a fraction of that and the result is excellent. Dark, even colour throughout and water-repellent.

05 — FAQ Common questions

Everything we get asked before a first booking.

Can't find your answer? Call 0800 208 8885 — we usually pick up within an hour during opening hours.

Is this the same as painting the hood?
No — fabric dye penetrates the fibres of the fabric rather than sitting as a coating on top. This means the hood continues to flex, fold and operate normally without cracking or peeling. Painting a soft top with a surface coating is a different (inferior) approach.
What colours can you restore?
We restore original colours — black, dark grey, navy, dark green. We do not change colour (e.g. black to navy) as that is a specialist separate process. If unsure what your original colour should be, we can advise from the vehicle model.
How long does recolouring last?
With re-proofing sealant applied and regular maintenance, recolouring lasts 2–4 years before any fading returns. The hood should be cleaned and re-proofed annually to maintain the result.
Do you clean the hood first?
Yes — thorough cleaning and stripping is part of the recolouring preparation. Dye applied to a dirty surface will not bond correctly or evenly.
Can you recolour a hood that is torn or has damage?
Physical tears should be repaired by a trimmer before recolouring — dye cannot cover or fix structural damage. We assess the hood on arrival and advise if any repair work is needed first.
