A British winter is hard on cars: road salt, grit, constant damp, long dark drives and freezing mornings. A bit of preparation in autumn prevents corrosion, improves safety and keeps the car healthier through to spring. Work through this checklist before the first frost.
1. Protect the paint
Apply a durable wax, sealant or ceramic coating so salt and grime have less to cling to and wash off more easily. A winter protection valet is built for this.
2. Defend the underbody
The underbody, arches and sills take the worst of the road salt. Underbody rust protection shields the areas most prone to corrosion.
3. Improve glass and visibility
- Apply a windscreen rain repellent for better wet and night visibility
- Check wiper blades and replace if smearing
- Top up screenwash with a winter-grade, freeze-resistant mix
4. Check the essentials
- Tyres — tread depth and pressure; consider winter tyres for rural areas
- Battery — cold weakens batteries; a weak one will fail on a frosty morning
- Lights — clean and check all bulbs; restore foggy headlights for night driving
5. Weatherproof the interior
Winter means wet feet, wet dogs and condensation. Rubber mats protect carpets, and keeping the interior dry prevents the damp that leads to mould and musty smells. A clean, dry interior copes with winter far better.
