A ceramic coating isn't a quick spray-and-go job, and the curing period afterwards matters as much as the application. If you're booking one, here's a realistic timeline so you can plan around it.
Why application takes a day or more
The actual coating goes on relatively quickly — but it's the preparation that takes the time, and that's what makes the coating last:
- Thorough decontamination wash and clay bar
- Paint correction to remove swirls (so they're not sealed in)
- Panel wipe to remove all oils
- Careful coating application and levelling, panel by panel
On a car needing full correction, this can extend to more than a day. That prep is why a coating costs more than a wax — see our cost guide.
The curing timeline
| Stage | Timeframe |
|---|---|
| Touch-dry / safe to drive | A few hours after application |
| Initial cure | 24–48 hours |
| Full hardness | ~7 days |
What to avoid during the first week
- Don't wash the car for about 7 days while the coating hardens
- Avoid heavy rain in the first 24–48 hours if you can (a garage helps)
- No automated washes — ever, really, but especially now
- Avoid bird droppings sitting — gently rinse off if needed, don't scrub
Aftercare for a long-lasting coating
Once cured, maintain it with a gentle hand wash and a pH-neutral shampoo. Done right, the coating lasts 3–5 years. Avoid harsh chemicals and brush washes, which shorten its life.
